Once you decide to go on a driving tour in Australia your biggest problem will be trying to decide exactly where to go. There is so much to see in this unique and diverse country that your only limits will be time and resources. If you are interested in history and architecture then maybe you will spend more time in the cities of Australia. An interest in wildlife and nature may lead you to spend more time in the outback. In preparation for your trip pay attention to the type of roads you will be traveling and arrange for rental of the appropriate vehicle. Some roadways require 4WD vehicles and there may be advantages to visiting in particular seasons depending on climate.
1. The Great Ocean Road
Another consideration will be your point of entry into the country. If you are arriving at Melbourne Airport, then an obvious route for you to consider would be The Great Ocean Road. This route leading to Adelaide is filled with spectacular landscapes, surf spots and many parks filled with lush forests and cascading waterfalls. For those interested in wildlife and conservation, an overnight stay on Kangaroo Island is a must.
2. Explorer’s Highway
Explorer’s Highway is a somewhat longer route which runs between Adelaide and Darwin. This drive slices right through the country giving you a sampling of the rolling green countrysides, vineyards of South Australia, the red sands of Simpson Desert and the tropical rainforests of Darwin.
3. Poacher’s Trail
If you are looking for a short day trip featuring wine and food, then Poacher’s Trail may fit your agenda. This drive through the countryside surrounding Australia’s capital, Canberra, is filled with cool climate wineries, country cafes, art galleries and craft studios.
4. Coastal Queensland
Coastal Queensland with the Great Barrier Reef is an area rich in natural beauty. Head out of Cairns and travel Bloomfield Track from Cape Tribulation to Cooktown, snaking through the tropical rainforest, where the coastlines and wildlife are incomparable. You will need 4WD (4 wheel drive), but it is well worth it. Travel through superb national parks, the rum town of Bundaberg, Rockhampton and beautiful coral islands.
5. Fraser Island
Another popular drive heads out of Brisbane north to Fraser Island. This is another area that will require a 4WD vehicle. Head off road and explore sandy beaches and tropical rainforests for a once in a lifetime experience. Nearby Hervey Bay is a popular whale watching site you will not want to miss.
One of the best ways to see Australia is by taking a driving tour. Selfdrive tours give you the freedom to go exactly where you want and spend your time exactly as you want. Obtain reservations for car rental prior to your visit and be ready to hit the road.
